- Visit a ServiceOntario location: You’ll need to visit a ServiceOntario center to transfer your motorcycle license to Ontario. You’ll need to bring the following:
- Your current motorcycle license from your home province. Mus not be expired or suspended.
- Proof of residency in Ontario (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement, or bank statement).
- Payment for the license transfer fee.
- You must surrender your home province licence.
- If your license has expired, suspended, or if you don’t have proper documentation, you will need to take follow the Ontario's graduated licence process (M1, -> M2, -> M).
Jurisdictions with Exchange Agreements:
Ontario has agreements with some countries that allow you to exchange your full foreign motorcycle license for an Ontario one directly . If your jurisdiction is not on the list, or your jucence is limited or learner level, you’ll need to go through the normal Ontario motorcyclist licensing process (M1, M2, M).
The list of jurisdictions that can exchange licenses with Ontario:
United States: Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Jersey, Ohio, Texas and Vermont.
- Current, valid full class driver’s licence.
- Proof of Ontario residency (e.g., a utility bill, rental agreement, etc.)
- Driving abstract dated within the last 6 months. The driving abstract must be original and must indicate the date the license was first issued (no photocopies).Electronic driver abstracts (e.g. obtained or transmitted by email, facsimile, or downloaded from licensing jurisdiction website) are acceptable provided they contain the driver’s full name or driver’s licence number, and the following must be contained on either the driver’s licence or the abstract: letterhead, logo, emblem, or coat of arms of the issuing government body or licensing authority; date first licensed; date of birth; licence class(es); licence status; expiry date; and date the abstract was issued.

- A DriveTest employee will conduct an interprovincial record exchange (IRE) to check the licence status. If your licence is full, and not suspended or expired you can exchange your licence. This can take up to 2 weeks, You may be issued a temporary driver’s permit while you wait. This is usually valid for 90 days..
- Your current licence must be surrendered.
- Motorcycle Safety Course: If you’re transferring from a country or province where you’ve completed a recognized motorcycle safety course, you may be eligible for some exemptions from road tests or be able to fast-track your M2 license.
- Out-of-Country Riders: If you’re a visitor or temporary resident (e.g., on a work or study permit), you might be able to use your foreign motorcycle license for up to 60 days. After that, you will need to follow Ontario’s licensing requirements.
- Go to a ServiceOntario center with your valid motorcycle license from another province or country, proof of identity, and proof of Ontario residency.
- If from another Canadian province: You may directly exchange your license.
- If from outside Canada: You may need to take the written and road tests depending on your country’s licensing agreement with Ontario.
- Pay the necessary fees and take any required tests.
- Receive your Ontario motorcycle license.
